The University of California, Davis School of Medicine seeks a successful leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. UC Davis Health is the region's only academic health center focused on discovering and sharing knowledge and providing the highest quality of care. UC Davis Health is a hub of innovation that encompasses UC Davis Medical Center, UC Davis School of Medicine, The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis, and the UC Davis Medical Group.

The recruitment of the Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is essential to the continued growth and success of UC Davis Health, the School of Medicine, and the department, as it works to achieve its many academic and clinical aspirations and excel in all of its important mission endeavors.

The Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences will provide broad leadership and administrative oversight of the department's clinical and research initiatives. The Chair reports directly to the Dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine. The selected candidate will also hold the Joe Tupin Endowed Chair in Psychiatry.

The Chair will have direct oversight over 54 faculty, 462 staff members and 66 students. Direct reports to the Chair include department faculty, a Chief Administrative Officer, Forensic Division Chief, Clinical Director and an Administrative Specialist. The Chair will provide fiscal leadership for the Department, overseeing the $30M operating budget, $94M from research initiatives and $25M in external service contracts.

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is a top-ranked organization with nationally recognized strengths in research, teaching and service. The Department received over $22 million in NIH research funding in 2016 and was recently ranked 12th out of 91 academic psychiatry departments nationwide by the Blue Ridge Institute of Medicine. In addition to making incredible advances in research, the Department also serves as a beacon of advocacy and quality care, serving as one of the largest providers of psychiatric care in the Central Valley. Complimenting this well- rounded department are the UC Davis MIND Institute, Center for Neuroscience, the Center for Mind and Brain, and the California National Primate Research Center, affiliate UC Davis partners that provide the department with exceptional opportunities for innovative, multi-disciplinary programs, and research activities.

In order for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to achieve its goals, the Chair will be expected to address the following opportunities and challenges:

Candidates should hold a M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. The candidates must also possess academic credentials that qualify for an appointment as Full Professor in the Ladder Rank (Regular), In Residence, Clinical Investigator (Clinical X), or the Health Sciences Clinical Professor series, demonstrated skill in the forward thinking and strategic administration of a major psychiatry clinical service, have a California Medical License (or be eligible for licensure), and be board certified. Candidates should have a strong background in academic medicine, including demonstrated excellence in clinical service, medical education, and research, and significant experience as a physician leader in an academic setting.

The successful candidate will possess most, if not all, of the following qualities and characteristics:

  • A distinguished record leading high quality clinical care and excellent research activity, and of realizing the mutually reinforcing
  • A record of implementing initiatives to meet the changes of academic medicine and patient care.

  • Ability to and interest to commit to UC Davis's mission and with a goal to keep the institution's priorities front and center.
  • Exceptional leadership skills, with proven success in fostering a spirit of unity and collaboration across a major clinical
  • A record of developing cross-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary initiatives, within an academic campus and
  • A commitment to transparency and an inclusive management
  • A strong understanding of both research and clinical practice in
  • Demonstrated commitment to community health and
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with faculty, administration, trainees, and clinical
  • Demonstrated experience in talent management and development to recruit top faculty, residents, fellows and
  • Proven business acumen and financial management
  • The aptitude and desire to raise substantial resources to support clinical, research, and educational activities of an academic department; the ability to identify and leverage multiple revenue
  • An ability to be a compelling and effective external representative of an organization, particularly with governmental
