The Department of Psychiatry and Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University is inviting applications for a full-time clinical academic faculty position as a Forensic Psychiatrist at Regional Mental Health Care (RMHC) St. Thomas - part of St. Joseph’s Health Care London. Academic rank will be determined by experience and qualifications at the time of appointment. Candidates must hold an MD or equivalent and be eligible for licensure in the Province of Ontario with actual or anticipated certification in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC).

Annual Remuneration Package (payroll): salary $299,361; Alternate Funding Plan $30,000; education and professional allowance $8,000; benefits (family) $5,087; HOOPP pension $27,681. 10 paid education days per year; 5 weeks vacation after 1 year of service.

At Western University, this is a particularly exciting time to work in forensic psychiatry. Our goal is to be the leader in forensic mental health science in Southwestern Ontario and beyond. Clinically, our interdisciplinary team works closely together with each of our clients utilizing a recovery-oriented treatment philosophy – one that prioritizes individual choice and personal goals, builds on strengths, and instills hope. Academically, we are committed to advancing the scientific evidence base in our field, and providing exceptional educational opportunities for trainees in all disciplines. The RCPSC has recently formalized forensic psychiatry as a psychiatric sub-specialty, and we are in the beginning phases of working towards fellowship accreditation.

All of this exciting change is transpiring as we move into a brand new 89-bed state-of-the-art forensic hospital in St. Thomas in 2013 (http://www.sjhc.london.on.ca/newmentalhealthfacilities). The building design will provide a physical environment that will maximize client rehabilitation in preparation for community re-integration, and will also significantly enhance the quality of work life for our staff. Our inpatient programs offer assessment, treatment and rehabilitation services while a growing Forensic Outreach Team provides intensive support and interventions to clients being followed in the community while still under the Disposition of the Ontario Review Board (ORB). RMHC St. Thomas has multiple linkages with other forensic facilities, courts, community agencies, and academic institutions. The program is also affiliated with the Lawson Health Research Institute, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and the Faculty of Health Sciences. Our program has provincial representation at the Forensic Directors’ Group and across Southwestern Ontario on seven local Human Services and Justice Coordinating Committees.

Applicants will have a proven academic and clinical track record in psychiatry, with relevant experience in forensic psychiatry. The Forensic Division encourages activities in clinical/service development, teaching, and research. Leadership skills will be an asset to assist in strategic planning, capacity building and collaboration within teams, the department, and across the region. The desired candidate will embrace evidence-based practice and will thrive in an environment of continuous learning and education.

Just moments from the 401 corridor and a 30-minute drive from London, St. Thomas (population 35,000) is located in the heart of Southwestern Ontario. Situated between the shores of Lakes Huron and Erie, the region has numerous small picturesque towns and lakeside villages, each with its own unique charm. The area is known for its summer theatre including the Stratford Festival, and its locally grown food and wine. London is a medium-sized city (approximate population 350,000) with the amenities of a large city and a regional catchment area of approximately 1,500,000. London houses a number of art galleries, theatres, and a symphonic orchestra and prides itself on having an excellent public school system. Conveniently located in Southwestern Ontario approximately half-way (2 hours) between Toronto and Detroit, London also has an international airport and a national train service.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of intent and accompanying curriculum vitae, along with the names of three references to be contacted, to:

Dr. Paul Links, Chair, Department of Psychiatry, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University Chief of London Affiliated Hospitals Mental Health Services c/o Regional Mental Health Care – London, 850 Highbury Avenue London, Ontario N6A 4H1

Applications will be accepted until position is filled.

Positions are subject to budget approval. Applicants should have fluent written and oral communication skills in English. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. The University of Western Ontario is committed to employment equity and welcomes applications from all qualified women and men, including visible minorities, aboriginal people and persons with disabilities.
