However, the use of Desyrel in patients with insomnia but without depression has not been well studied, Dr. Nard said.
Even for conditions outside the realm of mental health, such as cardiovascular disease, researchers have found a link between insomnia and poorer outcomes, Dr. Nard said.
"Insomnia is a major contributor to just about every other disorder," he said. "It makes sense that the body needs sleep to recover. So I have no qualms about helping patients with insomnia to sleep."
