Teen Suicide Most Likely Within 2 Years of Parent’s Suicide

February 21, 2013

The greatest risk for suicide among adolescents or young adults whose parent has committed suicide is within 1 to 2 years of the parent’s death, according to this large population-based retrospective cohort study. The authors recommend careful monitoring and intervention for suicide attempts among adolescents during this critical 2-year period.

Time to Hospitalization for Suicide Attempt by the Timing of Parental Suicide During Offspring Early Development
JAMA Psychiatry | Feb 1, 2013 (Free abstract. Full text $30)

The classroom is an obvious place to monitor adolescents who are at high risk of depression. A classroom-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program may increase self-awareness among high-risk adolescents, but it does not reduce depressive symptoms compared to attention control or usual care, state the authors of this 1-year-long randomized controlled trial. They share their thoughts on theory versus practice in using the classroom to prevent depression among adolescents.

RESULT: Classroom based cognitive behavioural therapy in reducing symptoms of depression in high risk adolescents: pragmatic cluster randomised controlled trial
