Martin Luther King Jr is remembered for his courage, conviction, and dedication to civil rights. But King also has a link to mental health and psychiatry. As a young teen, a distraught King attempted suicide not once but twice.1 In his later life, he suffered from spells of “exhaustion,” in which he lost interest in things, ate too much, and slept too much.2 Medical workups for hospitalizations related to this were negative, although those close to him recognized it as depression. The stigma against mental illness caused him to forgo treatment.3
Yet his words continue to inspire and remind the world of the continued need to fight for civil rights of all people.
