According to physician recruiters Merritt Hawkins, result comparisons between 2006/2007 and 2009/2010 surveys reveal a 121% increase in requests for psychiatrists. Further, the US Bureau of Health Professions predicts a 100% rise in demand for psychiatrists by 2020, based on a 19% projected increase for general psychiatry from 1995 to 2020.

More psychiatrists than any other medical specialty are needed-this in the face of major doctor shortages and fewer students pursuing psychiatry as a career. With an almost 50/50 split between psychiatrists under and over age 55 years, it is no surprise that psychiatry is among the top 5 physician searches by medical specialty.
