Take-Home Messages: Clinical Confidence in Transitioning Patients to Cobenfy
In the final episode, "Take-Home Messages: Clinical Confidence in Transitioning Patients to Cobenfy," David Walling, PhD, explored how these findings add to the evolving evidence base for Cobenfy in schizophrenia, and what questions remain for future research.
This switching study fills a critical real-world evidence gap left by the acute EMERGENT trials, confirming that both a 2-week and 4-week cross-titration from atypical antipsychotics— including olanzapine and quetiapine—is safe and does not destabilize patients with schizophrenia, Walling explained, With patients showing improvement in symptoms and functioning across both groups. He outlined 3 key take-home messages:
- The transition to Cobenfy can be completed safely and efficaciously regardless of titration speed;
- Patients on pine-class antipsychotics can also transition successfully;
- Patients demonstrate meaningful clinical improvement when they complete the switch to an efficacious dose.
Drawing on an analogy to early clinical hesitation around atypical antipsychotics in the mid-1990s, Walling encouraged practitioners who remain hesitant to identify patients who are not meeting treatment goals, particularly those with metabolic concerns regarding their current medication, and to give Cobenfy a try.
Throughout the conversation, the expert provides a comprehensive reflection on the field and the factors that may shape how clinicians approach schizophrenia care moving forward.
