Compulsive Disorders

The existing literature on the hoarding of animals by human beings has been written by officials of the Humane Society of the United States and animal shelter operators. Only one case series appears in medical or psychological literature.

Three reports on olanzapine (Zyprexa) as a possible treatment for bipolar affective disorder, presented at a National Institute of Mental Health-sponsored meeting in June, reflected pursuit of this indication-despite the initial "nonapprovable" letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that was issued October 1998.

It is now customary psychiatric practice to think of a patient's illness as primarily biological in origin-so much so that, for many illnesses, published practice guidelines almost exclusively describe medication strategies.

There is an increasing body of data that suggests there may be relationship between certain forms of childhood-onset OCD and previous Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infections. They seem to have early-onset OCD, tic disorder, Sydenham's chorea and family history of tics. Sydenham's chorea, a major manifestation of rheumatic fever and a disorder generally limited to prepubertal children, is thought to be disease of basal ganglia, and the basal ganglia is thought to be involved in both Sydenham's chorea and OCD. Children with Sydenham's chorea frequently present with OCD symptoms.
