Meet “The Psych Consult: Second Opinion,” a new podcast from Psychiatric Times hosted by Claire Brandon, MD, a medically complex psychiatrist and founder of Whole Body Psychiatry in New York City.
This show lives at the intersection of psychiatry and medicine, where the brain and the body stop pretending they come from different departments. Each episode tackles one topic at a time: a hormone, a lab value, an organ system, a drug interaction, or a condition that mimics depression but isn't, giving working psychiatrists the practical pearls they need on what to order, what to ask, when to worry, and when to relax.
Why does this matter now? Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 51% of American adults live with 2 or more chronic medical conditions, a number that climbs to roughly 80% in patients over 65.1 Patients with serious mental illness die 10 to 25 years earlier than the general population,2 driven largely by cardiometabolic disease rather than suicide. Medical illness can masquerade as a psychiatric presentation, and psychiatric treatment can quietly affect medical health in return. Brandon makes the case that recognizing this overlap is not a consultation-liaison fellowship requirement. It is core to being a physician who specializes in psychiatry.
